Taking Care of Your Hair & Scalp Beneath Wigs and Hair Extensions

While we love our beautiful flowing hair extensions and wigs, taking care of your hair underneath is a must. It is the crown you cant take off. Wearing weaves longer than 6 weeks straight without proper hair maintenance can do damage to your hair and scalp and should be removed to thoroughly cleanse and condition thirsty scalp and strands. During this time treat your hair with TLC allowing hair and scalp to breathe and refrain from any style that causes stress on your strands & hair follicles. Clip ins are also a good alternative to hair extensions. Tight doesn't make it right and can cause traction alopecia. If your scalp is dry and flaky, use a medicated shampoo that contains zinc pyrithione or selenium sulfide, concentrating mostly on the scalp. Leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse it out. Then wash once more with a regular sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. Do this once a week for 4 weeks to see a difference doing this more often will dry the hair out . If you’re still seeing flakes, visit a dermatologist before getting extensions back in. You may have seborrheic dermatitis, which can be harder to get under control when you have extensions. Don't forget to nourish the scalp with a lightweight oil or grease and massage that scalp!  Be mindful of all products you put in your hair as well as lace glue for installing closures/frontals. Ingredients in glue can cause hair loss if not removed with glue remover or installed properly. Lace glue may also cause allergic reactions if you have itching and irritation along the hairline it may not be for you. Never hesitate to see a dermatologist. Be well my Queens!
